Woot.com
by Jen (September 30, 2006)
Wanna find neat stuff at cheap prices? I can’t say it better than the site itself does:
Woot.com is an online store and community that focuses on selling cool stuff cheap. It started as an employee-store slash market-testing type of place for an electronics distributor, but it’s taken on a life of its own. We anticipate profitability by 2043 – by then we should be retired; someone smarter might take over and jack up the prices. Until then, we’re still the lovable scamps we’ve always been. But don’t take our word for it: see what the online community has to say at this Wikipedia article.
Here’s the interesting thing: they sell one product each day. Period. That’s it. It goes until it’s sold out, or until 11:59 pm that evening. You can get on their mailing list and be informed every night, a few minutes after midnight Central Time, of the product of the day.
There’s a forum and a blog, and you should definitely read the FAQ before diving in. You’re encouraged, for example, to return items to manufacturers rather than Woot, because you’ll generally get a better deal from the manufacturer. It’s a pretty interesting and unique concept, more like a swap meet than your standard online shop.
